Glossary
Short definitions of the terms used across SchemaReel, with sources where a definition comes from a specification or from Google.
- JSON-LD
- A way to write Linked Data in JSON, published as a W3C Recommendation (version 1.1) on July 16, 2020. Google recommends it for structured data where a site's setup allows.
- @context
- The JSON-LD keyword that maps short terms to a vocabulary. For Schema.org, use
"https://schema.org". - @type
- The keyword that says what kind of thing a node is, such as Organization or Article. Schema.org type names are case sensitive and use US spelling.
- @id
- A stable identifier for a node, usually a URL with a fragment. Two nodes with the same @id describe the same thing.
- @graph
- A JSON-LD keyword holding several top-level nodes in one block, often linked to each other by @id.
- Entity
- A single, identifiable thing: a company, a person, a game, a page. Entity SEO is the work of describing these things consistently.
- sameAs
- A Schema.org property: "URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity."
- Rich result
- A search result with extra visual features, such as breadcrumbs or review stars. Valid markup does not guarantee one.
- Rich Results Test
- Google's tool for checking whether a page's markup meets the technical requirements of Google Search features.
- Schema Markup Validator
- A general tool at validator.schema.org, launched in beta on May 21, 2021, that checks Schema.org markup without testing Google feature requirements.
- Self-serving review
- A review an organization controls about itself. Google does not show review stars for these on LocalBusiness or Organization markup.
- AggregateRating
- A Schema.org type for an average rating. Google requires ratingValue and at least one of ratingCount or reviewCount.
- Site name
- The name Google may show for a site in results. WebSite markup on the home page states your preference.
- Structured data manual action
- A penalty applied when markup breaks Google's guidelines. The page loses rich result eligibility; Google says rankings are not affected.
- Illustrative data
- Invented records that show how a method or tool works. On SchemaReel they use fictional brands and reserved .example domains.
- Reserved .example domain
- A top-level domain set aside for documentation, so examples never point at a real company.
- Vocabulary
- A set of types and properties. Schema.org is the shared vocabulary used by major search engines.
- Knowledge panel
- A Google box with facts about an entity. Organization markup can influence which logo appears there; it cannot create one.
- Nesting
- Placing one node inside another, such as a Review inside a Game, instead of linking them by @id.
Each term links to deeper coverage elsewhere: start with entity SEO for iGaming brands or the entity reference.
