Structured Data for Sportsbooks: Hubs, Fixtures and Markets
Sportsbook sites generate thousands of short-lived pages for fixtures and markets. Structured data on those pages has to scale without describing things that are not there, and the biggest temptation, Event markup, usually does not fit.
The core is the same as any brand
Strip away the odds and a sportsbook site is a brand with websites, help content and authors. The home page carries WebSite and Organization markup. Each market edition, such as a UK site and an Ontario site, gets its own WebSite node. Help articles carry Article and BreadcrumbList. None of this is sportsbook-specific, and all of it is covered in the entity SEO guide.
Hubs, competitions and fixtures
| Template | Type | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Sport hub (Football) | CollectionPage + BreadcrumbList | Permanent |
| Competition page | CollectionPage + BreadcrumbList | Season to season |
| Fixture or market page | WebPage + BreadcrumbList | Days; ends after settlement |
| Rules and settlement help | Article + BreadcrumbList | Permanent, updated when rules change |
| Responsible gambling page | WebPage | Permanent |
Why fixture pages are not Event pages
Schema.org defines SportsEvent, and it is tempting to wrap every fixture in it. Google's event structured data documentation sets conditions that a betting market page does not meet: "Events must be bookable to the general public" and "Events must take place in a physical location." It also asks sites not to mark up non-event products or purchase opportunities as events. A page that offers bets on a match is not a page where readers book that match.
A sportsbook can still describe the fixture in the visible content: teams, kick-off time with its time zone, venue and status. If you use SportsEvent markup at all, do it for what it is, a description, not as a route to an event feature, and keep it off pages where it would mislead.
Templates at scale
- Generate from data you already trust. Fixture names, dates and venues come from the trading feed; check that the feed's values match what the page shows.
- Plan the end of a page. When a fixture is settled and the page is removed or redirected, its markup goes with it. Do not leave stale fixtures in sitemaps or lists.
- Keep the trail stable. Home / Football / Competition / Fixture works for readers and survives season changes.
- Test a sample of every template after each release, because a feed change can break thousands of pages at once.
Market rules that shape templates
In Australia, licensed online wagering on sport is allowed, but in-play online wagering is a prohibited service under the Interactive Gambling Act. In Great Britain, Ontario and US states with legal sports betting, each edition must reflect its own license, age rules and safer gambling tools. These are content duties first; markup simply must not contradict them.

}Questions
Can a sportsbook use Event markup for fixtures?
Google's event documentation requires events to be bookable by the public at a physical location and warns against marking non-events as events. Betting market pages do not meet that.
Should teams be described as entities?
Schema.org has a SportsTeam type. Use it only where a page is about the team, and expect no Google feature from it.
What should happen to markup when a fixture ends?
It should leave with the page. Remove or redirect settled fixture pages and keep lists and sitemaps current.
