Breadcrumb Trails for Casino and Sportsbook Templates
Breadcrumb markup describes where a page sits in a site. Google uses it for the breadcrumb trail in desktop results, and it only works when the trail in the markup matches the trail readers see.
What Google requires
Google's breadcrumb documentation asks you to "define a BreadcrumbList that contains at least two ListItems". Each ListItem needs three properties: position, name and item. There is one exception: "If the breadcrumb is the last item in the breadcrumb trail, item is not required."
The feature itself has narrowed. Google's documentation says it "is available on desktop in all regions and languages where Google Search is available", and an update in January 2025 clarified that breadcrumbs appear in desktop results, not mobile. Markup still describes the page on any device; the visible feature is desktop only.

}User paths, not folders
Google recommends "providing breadcrumbs that represent a typical user path to a page, instead of mirroring the URL structure." That matters on gambling sites, where URLs often reflect a platform's internals. A game might live at /games/provider-17/title-2041/ while readers reach it through Home, Slots and the game name. The trail should show the second, because that is the path readers recognize.
Breadcrumbs and menus answer different questions. A breadcrumb says where this page sits; a menu says where readers can go next. Menu markup is covered on the SiteNavigationElement reference, which explains why no Google feature uses it.
Patterns for common templates
| Template | Trail | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Game page | Home / Slots / Game name | Use the category readers browse, not the studio folder |
| Live casino table | Home / Live casino / Table name | Keep dealer names out of the trail |
| Sportsbook market | Home / Football / Competition / Fixture | Fixture pages expire; let the trail end at the competition when the fixture page is gone |
| Help article | Home / Help / Payments / Article | Mirror the help center menu |
| Market edition | Home / Ontario / Help / Article | Only if the market is a visible level of the site |
Errors validators report most
- Missing position. Every ListItem needs a number, starting at 1.
- Positions out of order. Numbers must follow the trail order.
- Missing item on a middle level. Only the last item may leave out its URL.
- Empty or relative URLs. Use full https addresses.
- One-item trails. A trail with only Home is not a breadcrumb.
- Markup without a visible trail. If readers cannot see the breadcrumb, the markup describes nothing on the page.
Try the broken example in the workbench to see how each error is reported, or read common validation errors.
Several trails for one page
A game can sit in more than one category, such as Slots and New games. Google's breadcrumb documentation allows more than one trail on a page. Use that only when both paths are visible on the page; otherwise pick the path most readers take.
Questions
Should the home page have breadcrumb markup?
No. A trail needs at least two items, and the home page is the start of every trail.
Do breadcrumbs show on mobile results?
Google's documentation says the breadcrumb feature appears on desktop. Keep the markup anyway; it still describes the page structure.
Must the trail match the URL?
No. Google recommends a typical user path rather than the URL structure.
